Benefits of a Doula
Parents consistently report higher satisfaction with their birth experience when continuous support is present. The Cochrane review found improved satisfaction and a lower likelihood of reporting negative feelings about childbirth. These subjective outcomes matter; they’re associated with better mental health postpartum and more positive bonding.
Doulas can also help reduce medical interventions. In pooled data, continuous support was associated with fewer cesareans and instrumental births, and less need for analgesia. The effect is strongest when the support person is not part of the hospital staff and is there solely for the birthing person—i.e., a doula.
Professional groups encourage shared decision-making and respectful, person-centered care during labor—an area where doulas often play a key role by helping parents understand options, ask questions, and communicate preferences with clinicians.
